Saying goodbye to your reptile in Barcelona

Barcelona, Catalonia

Reptile aftercare in Barcelona: the local picture

Barcelona summers are hot and humid, and flats without air conditioning can become very warm. If your pet dies at home in July or August, move them to the coolest room and place cool packs wrapped in towels beneath them. Winters are mild, so there is usually a little more time then. Garden burial is rarely an option in a city this dense, which is one reason cremation is the most common choice.

Many Barcelona pets spent their lives on balconies and terraces, in sunny flats or in the courtyards at the heart of the Eixample blocks, and those small spaces often shape how owners want to remember them. An individual cremation with ashes returned gives you the most options: keeping the ashes at home, scattering part of them somewhere meaningful, or dividing them among family.

Home euthanasia is available in Barcelona for reptiles as well as cats and dogs, though not every mobile vet is comfortable with species that need specific sedation. If you'd like a calm goodbye in your own living room, ask whether the vet has put a bearded dragon or tortoise to sleep before, and whether they can take your reptile straight to a crematory afterwards.

Barcelona is home to about 1,620,000 people.

Barcelona sits within easy reach of Palma de Mallorca (128 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Barcelona; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

50.11%[1]

In 2024, cremations overtook burials in Spain for the first time: 50.11% of deaths (218,538 cremations).

6 million[2]

About 6 million US households keep reptiles.

700,000[3]

There are about 700,000 pet tortoises and turtles in the UK (1.6% of households).

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The published sources behind those figures are UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026 and Embrace Pet Insurance.

Burial or cremation? The view from Spain

Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Spain, at about 50.11%[1], yet burial remains familiar. Among reptile keepers you'll find both. A tiny gecko buried under a favorite plant is as valid a goodbye as a private cremation, provided you're sure of the death and bury deep enough to keep scavengers away.

We take the Spain rate from Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Barcelona, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Barcelona weather and your reptile

Local weather matters for reptiles in two ways: how stable your vivarium stays through heat waves, cold snaps and power cuts, and whether burying outdoors is practical. A provider serving Barcelona will know the seasons well, so ask what they'd suggest at this time of year for a reptile the size of yours.

Seasonal scene for planning aftercare in Barcelona

Budgeting for a snake, lizard or tortoise in Barcelona

In Germany, a consumer guide lists collective pet cremation at €85 to €205 and individual at €165 to €375[5]; in the Netherlands, a comparison of 31 crematoria put averages at about €200 and €300[6]. Those figures are mostly for cats and dogs, so a small reptile in Barcelona should sit at or below the bottom of the range.

Burial, scattering and protected species in Catalonia

Some places license venomous snakes, large constrictors or crocodilians separately from ordinary pets. If yours was covered in Catalonia, the permit office may want to hear that it has died, and any crematory will want the species named before it arrives. A dated cremation certificate satisfies most requests of this kind.

What to do when your reptile dies in Barcelona

  1. If a sitter or neighbor found your reptile, have them take pictures of the tank and the thermostat setting before anything is touched.
  2. Have them wear gloves, seal the body in a bag inside a lidded tub, label it and refrigerate it on a shelf well clear of food.
  3. Phone your usual vet and ask whether the clinic can receive the body from your sitter. Many will hold it until you're back.
  4. Don't cut the trip short for the cremation. Once your reptile is cold and sealed, or at the vet, a few days' wait does no harm.
  5. Travelling with your reptile when it died? Any local vet can confirm death, and can then either keep the body cold until you drive home or point you to a crematory nearby.
  6. Check your other animals first when you get home, especially if a heating fault may have played a part.

Ways to remember a reptile locally

Most Barcelona pets live in apartments, from the grid of the Eixample to the narrow streets of the old town, where vehicles cannot always get close to the door. Pet aftercare providers in the Barcelona area generally collect from a flat or from the vet's clinic; tell them the floor, whether the building has a lift and whether a van can stop outside. Services commonly work in Catalan and Spanish.

Questions people ask

Why does the Barcelona page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) reports about 50.11%[1] of Spain residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

My reptile died within its first year. Is that common?

It's less common than some claims suggest. A peer-reviewed University of Kent survey found only 3.6%[8] of pet snakes, chelonians and lizards died within their first year, though rates varied by species, with chameleons highest. If your reptile died young, a vet can help you understand why, which may protect any others you keep.

What's the difference between private and communal cremation for a reptile?

In private cremation your reptile is cremated alone and only its ashes come back. In communal cremation several animals are cremated together and no ashes are returned. Some providers also offer partitioned cremation, where pets share a chamber but are kept apart; ask exactly how separation works, because it matters most for very small bodies.

Are there exotics vets open at night in Barcelona?

Larger cities often have at least one emergency hospital that sees exotics, but not every overnight clinic does. Phone before you drive and ask specifically about reptiles. If your reptile has clearly died, there's usually no need for an emergency visit: seal it in a tub in the fridge and call an exotics vet in the morning.

Can I keep my tortoise's shell instead of cremating it?

Yes, but only if you decide before cremation. A shell can be cremated along with the body, or cleaned and preserved by a specialist and kept whole. Tell the provider in writing which you want. If your tortoise is a protected species, check the rules before ever selling or giving the shell away.

How much does it cost to cremate a snake or lizard in Barcelona?

Published prices for small pets outside the US give a good guide. In the UK, individual cremation of a cat-sized pet is roughly £160 to £190; in Australia the median for pets under 5 kg is about AUD 412; in Ireland individual cremation starts from €150 for pets under 2 kg. Communal is much cheaper. Ask a Barcelona provider for its small-pet rate and what's included.
