For a reptile, the choice usually comes down to practicalities: do you have land, will you stay, and do you want something to keep? Cremation answers the last question; burial suits keepers with a garden they won't leave.

Permits, paperwork and burial in Spain
Moving remains is simpler than moving a live reptile, but a shell from a protected tortoise species can still need paperwork if it crosses a national border. If you might one day move abroad with your tortoise's shell or ashes, hold on to the certificate or permit issued with the animal. The notes below cover what Spain allows closer to home.
Who to call and what to do, in order
- Tell your child simply and honestly that the gecko or turtle has died. Saying it has "gone to sleep" can leave a small child afraid of going to bed.
- Let an adult do all the handling, wearing gloves. The CDC advises keeping children under five away from reptiles and their habitats because of Salmonella.
- Offer a way to say goodbye without touching: a drawing for the box, a short note or a favorite photo.
- Let them help choose between bringing ashes home and a garden burial. Being asked matters more than the answer.
- Save something they can hold, such as a framed shed skin or a scute in a small locket.
- Wash hands together afterwards, and clean anything the reptile touched before the empty tank is used again.
Sheds, shells and keepsakes
Valencia's long, humid summers mean time matters in July and August, when heat can build quickly in a closed flat. Keep your pet's body in the coolest room, wrapped and with cold packs. Winters are mild, so there is more time then. During Las Fallas in March, the fireworks and street closures can make any trip across the city slower, so plan for that.

Can I bury my reptile in the garden in Spain?
In many European countries you can bury a small pet on your own land, with conditions such as a minimum soil depth and distance from water. Germany, for instance, requires at least 50 cm of soil cover[7]. Rules differ by country and municipality, so check locally. Cremation avoids the question if you rent.
Can I keep my tortoise's shell instead of cremating it?
Yes, but only if you decide before cremation. A shell can be cremated along with the body, or cleaned and preserved by a specialist and kept whole. Tell the provider in writing which you want. If your tortoise is a protected species, check the rules before ever selling or giving the shell away.
Can I bury my reptile at home in Spain?
Often yes, on land you own and subject to local rules on depth and distance from water. Bury deep enough that animals can't dig it up, away from wells and vegetable beds, and never in a pot you'll keep indoors. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your reptile with you wherever you go.
Why does a tiny gecko cost almost as much to cremate as a cat?
Because most of the price is fixed work rather than size: collection, record keeping, running the chamber, cooling, processing the ashes and a return container. Those steps take much the same time for a 50-gram gecko as for a cat. That's why comparing each provider's minimum private price matters more than per-pound rates when your reptile is small.
