Snake, lizard and tortoise cremation in Malmo

Malmo, Skane

Getting reptile aftercare sorted in Malmo

Most people in Malmö live in apartments, from the older blocks around Möllevången and Davidshall to the newer waterfront buildings of Västra Hamnen and Hyllie. Many households cycle or use buses and trains rather than drive, which matters if you can't easily carry your pet yourself. When you ask for aftercare options, mention your district, floor and whether there's a lift, so a collection from home can be arranged if you need one.

Cremation is the norm for people in Sweden, with well over four in five funerals now cremations, and many Malmö families feel the same way about their pets. With few private gardens in the city, cremation is often the practical choice for cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and birds. Ask whether the cremation is individual, with ashes returned, or collective, and get the total price in writing before you agree.

If the nearest reptile specialist to Malmo is a drive away, plan before you need it. Save the number of an exotics vet, ask your regular practice whether it owns a Doppler probe, and keep disposable gloves and a lidded tub with your reptile supplies. None of that is morbid. It simply makes a very hard hour a little easier to get through.

Local attitudes to cremation and burial

Around 84.69%[1] of people in Sweden are cremated, one of the higher shares you'll find anywhere. Where cremation is this ordinary, keepers tend to think of it first, and home burial of a reptile is more a question of garden space than of tradition. For apartment keepers and renters, cremation is usually the practical answer anyway.

The Sweden figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Malmo weather and your reptile

Seasons change reptile behavior as much as they change timing. Many species eat less and barely move in the cooler months, and tortoises may hibernate. If your reptile stopped moving during a seasonal slowdown in Malmo, a vet check is the kind thing to do before you make any plans at all.

Paying for a reptile's cremation in Malmo

In France, a guide from insurer SantéVet puts collective cremation of a 20 kg dog at €70 to €120 and individual at €150 to €250[5]. A reptile weighing a few hundred grams should sit well below those figures. In Malmo, ask for the price by weight and whether a minimum charge applies regardless of size.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Skane: Skane costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Before you bury or scatter in Skane

Before a home burial anywhere in Skane, look past the regional rules to the ones closer to home. Leases, homeowners' associations and some city ordinances forbid burying animals on the property, even a small lizard. Cremation needs no such permission, and the ashes can go with you wherever you settle next.

The first 48 hours with a reptile, step by step

  1. Book the final appointment with a vet who treats reptiles regularly, and check whether sedation comes first. The usual approach is one injection to bring sleep, then a second to end life.
  2. Settle the aftercare before the day, because the consulting room is no place to weigh up options. Let the clinic know in advance if you'd like a private cremation with the ashes coming back.
  3. Pack a familiar hide or towel so the carrier smells like home, and on a cold day add a heat pack wrapped in cloth for the trip.
  4. Ask the vet to confirm death with a Doppler before you leave, because a reptile's heart can go on beating slowly for a while after the injection.
  5. Decide whether to stay in the room. Some keepers stay to the end, some say goodbye first, and neither is less loving.
  6. Read the cremation form before signing, making sure private or communal is ticked correctly and noting any wish about a shell, a shed or another keepsake.
  7. Pay ahead if the clinic allows it, so the last few minutes aren't about a card machine.

Ways to remember a reptile locally

Malmö has a mild coastal climate for Sweden, with cool, windy, damp winters and pleasant summers that rarely get very hot. That gives you a little time after a pet dies, but the body should still be kept cool: lay your pet on a towel in the coolest room, away from radiators, and place cold packs wrapped in cloth along the back. Most families choose what to do within a day.

Questions people ask

How do Sweden attitudes to cremation compare?

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Sweden human cremation rate at about 84.69%[1]. We show it on the Malmo page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Do crematories near Malmo take venomous snakes?

Many will, but you must tell them the species in advance. Handle the head only with tongs, place the body in a rigid, sealed container and label it clearly. Venom remains dangerous after death, and a bite reflex can persist for a while. Some providers ask for extra handling time, which may affect the price.

Can I take my reptile's ashes with me to another country?

Usually yes. Pet ashes are generally allowed through customs and on flights, but check the airline's rules and carry the cremation certificate. A tortoise shell is different: if the species is protected under wildlife-trade rules, moving the shell across a border can need a permit, so keep any paperwork that came with your tortoise and ask before you travel.

Can I keep my tortoise's shell instead of cremating it?

Yes, but only if you decide before cremation. A shell can be cremated along with the body, or cleaned and preserved by a specialist and kept whole. Tell the provider in writing which you want. If your tortoise is a protected species, check the rules before ever selling or giving the shell away.

Should I get a necropsy before cremating my reptile?

It's worth considering if the death was sudden or you keep other reptiles, because some infections spread between enclosures and a post-mortem can only happen once. Keep the body refrigerated, not frozen, and ask an exotics vet near Malmo about cost and timing. Cremation can still follow afterwards.

Why does a tiny gecko cost almost as much to cremate as a cat?

Because most of the price is fixed work rather than size: collection, record keeping, running the chamber, cooling, processing the ashes and a return container. Those steps take much the same time for a 50-gram gecko as for a cat. That's why comparing each provider's minimum private price matters more than per-pound rates when your reptile is small.
