In Sweden, most keepers arrange a reptile's cremation through a vet, often an exotics practice, which works with one or more pet crematories. You can usually contact a crematory directly too, which lets you ask the questions that matter for reptiles: how they contain a tiny body, whether they take large snakes and what happens to a shell.

How Sweden thinks about cremation
Because cremation is the norm in Sweden, where the human rate stands near 84.69%[1], some pet crematories let owners be present at the start. Few keepers ask for this with a reptile, but you can. It is one way to be certain a small body was handled on its own, and some providers charge a modest fee for it.
That Sweden rate is a human statistic published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
Sweden prices, from gecko to giant tortoise
European prices vary by country but follow one rule: collective (communal) cremation costs much less than individual. In Ireland, one crematorium lists individual cremation from €150 for pets under 2 kg[2], which covers most geckos, dragons and snakes. Ask a Sweden provider for its small-pet rate and exactly what's included.
In Germany, a consumer guide lists collective pet cremation at €85 to €205 and individual at €165 to €375[3]; in the Netherlands, a comparison of 31 crematoria put averages at about €200 and €300[4]. Those figures are mostly for cats and dogs, so a small reptile in Sweden should sit at or below the bottom of the range.

What Sweden allows for burial and ashes
Some places license venomous snakes, large constrictors or crocodilians separately from ordinary pets. If yours was covered in Sweden, the permit office may want to hear that it has died, and any crematory will want the species named before it arrives. A dated cremation certificate satisfies most requests of this kind.
Who to call and what to do, in order
- Tell your child simply and honestly that the gecko or turtle has died. Saying it has "gone to sleep" can leave a small child afraid of going to bed.
- Let an adult do all the handling, gloves on. The CDC says children younger than five should be kept away from reptiles and the places they live, because of Salmonella.
- Offer a way to say goodbye without touching: a picture they draw to go in the box, a few written words or a photo they love.
- Let them help choose whether the ashes come home or the pet is buried in the garden. What counts is that their opinion was wanted.
- Save something they can hold, such as a framed shed skin or a scute in a small locket.
- Wash hands together afterwards, then disinfect everything the reptile came into contact with before the tank gets a new occupant.
Honoring a long, quiet bond
Tiny amounts of ash suit tiny containers. One US retailer lists mini keepsake urns at about $15–$60[6], and by our estimate a one-ounce keepsake can cost a third more than a full-size wooden urn[7], because the craftsmanship is the same. For a gecko or anole, one keepsake holds everything, so there's no reason to buy both.

Can I bury my reptile at home in Sweden?
Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Local councils, cities and landlords can be stricter than regional rules. Because reptiles often carry Salmonella, bury well away from vegetable beds and wash your hands afterwards. If you rent, cremation keeps your reptile with you.
How much does reptile cremation cost in Sweden?
Most pet reptiles fall into the smallest weight band crematories use, so you're mostly paying the provider's minimum fee plus collection and a container. Very large tortoises, monitors and pythons are priced like big dogs. Prices vary between cities and rural areas across Sweden, so ask for an itemized written total that names your reptile's species and weight.
Is cremation common in Sweden?
For people, about 84.69%[1] of deaths in Sweden end in cremation, and pet aftercare tends to follow local habits. Among reptile keepers, cremation is common for long-lived animals like tortoises and for anyone without a garden, while small lizards and turtles are still often buried at home.
Can I keep my tortoise's shell in Sweden?
Usually yes, but you must decide before cremation, because a shell can't be recovered afterwards. A preservation specialist can clean it, or it can be cremated with the body. If your tortoise is a protected species, keep its paperwork and check the rules before selling or giving the shell to anyone else.
Is it hard to find a reptile vet in Sweden?
It depends where you are. Larger cities such as Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmo usually have at least one exotics practice, while smaller towns may rely on general vets. Any vet can confirm death and arrange cremation, but for a living reptile that's unwell, a reptile-experienced vet is worth the drive. Save a number before you need it.
How can I be sure my reptile was cremated on its own in Sweden?
Ask for the promise in writing. A good provider will state which type of cremation you're paying for, how a small body is tracked from pickup to return and what kind of certificate you'll receive. Some let you be present or drop your reptile off yourself. Vague answers to these questions are a reason to look elsewhere.
