Stockholm, Sweden
Reptile aftercare in Stockholm: the local picture
Stockholm is built across islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic, and most people in the inner city live in apartment buildings, often without a lift in the older blocks of Södermalm and Vasastan. Burying a pet at home is rarely an option here, so home collection and cremation is the usual choice. Mention stairs, entry codes and parking when you get in touch, since these affect how collection works.
Stockholm's winters are long and dark, with cold snaps and snow, while summers are short and light, with long evenings. In winter a cool room gives you a little time if your pet dies at home, but keep the body away from radiators and on a blanket. Around midsummer and the July holiday weeks, when much of Sweden is on holiday, ask about timing and storage.
Keepers with several animals are common in a metro like Stockholm, and a sudden death in a collection changes the plan. Before cremation, ask an exotics vet whether a necropsy (an animal post-mortem) makes sense; some infections spread between enclosures, and the chance to check disappears once the body is cremated. Leave the empty enclosure untouched for now and wash your hands well.

What local cremation culture means for keepers
Cremation now covers 84.69%[1] of human deaths in Sweden, so many younger keepers grew up with cremation as the default for people and pets alike. Reptile keepers also tend to plan carefully, and plenty decide on aftercare years before they need it, writing the provider's number next to the vet's in the care log.
We take the Sweden rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Stockholm, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Timing a goodbye around Stockholm's weather
Whatever the season in Stockholm, a small reptile's body keeps best in an ordinary household fridge, not on a windowsill or in an outdoor bin. If the fridge feels wrong to you, a cool box with frozen water bottles works for a day. Either way, label the container clearly so nobody opens it by mistake.

What reptile cremation costs in Stockholm
In France, a guide from insurer SantéVet puts collective cremation of a 20 kg dog at €70 to €120 and individual at €150 to €250[5]. A reptile weighing a few hundred grams should sit well below those figures. In Stockholm, ask for the price by weight and whether a minimum charge applies regardless of size.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Sweden: Sweden costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Burial, scattering and protected species in Sweden
Some places license venomous snakes, large constrictors or crocodilians separately from ordinary pets. If yours was covered in Sweden, the permit office may want to hear that it has died, and any crematory will want the species named before it arrives. A dated cremation certificate satisfies most requests of this kind.
Step by step, from first check to ashes
- Tell your child simply and honestly that their gecko or turtle has died. Phrases like "gone to sleep" can make bedtime frightening.
- Let an adult do all the handling, gloves on. The CDC says children younger than five should be kept away from reptiles and the places they live, because of Salmonella.
- Offer a way to say goodbye without touching: a drawing for the box, a short note or a favorite photo.
- Let them help choose between bringing ashes home and a garden burial. Being asked matters more than the answer.
- Save something they can hold, perhaps a shed skin behind glass or a single scute inside a little locket.
- Wash hands together afterwards, then disinfect everything the reptile came into contact with before the tank gets a new occupant.
Honoring a long, quiet bond
Stockholm families make the most of Djurgården, the waterfront paths and the forests at the edge of the city, and many spend summers in the archipelago. Pets are often part of all of it, from the summer cottage to a sunny balcony in town. Many owners here ask for individual cremation so the ashes can come home or go to a place that mattered. Confirm the type of cremation in writing.

Questions people ask
Why does the Stockholm page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 84.69%[1] of Sweden residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Do I have to use the crematory my Stockholm vet recommends?
No. Your vet's arrangement is convenient, but you can choose any provider that serves Stockholm and ask them to collect from the clinic. For a reptile, it's worth asking whether they have handled your species before and how they keep very small bodies separate from others.
How do I get a large snake or tortoise out of a Stockholm apartment?
Use a strong, lidded tub rather than a bag, and ask a second person to help if it's heavy. Take the service lift if your building has one and tell the front desk a collection is coming. Many providers will collect from inside your home if you give them the weight, the floor and any stairs.
Should I get a necropsy before cremating my reptile?
It's worth considering if the death was sudden or you keep other reptiles, because some infections spread between enclosures and a post-mortem can only happen once. Keep the body refrigerated, not frozen, and ask an exotics vet near Stockholm about cost and timing. Cremation can still follow afterwards.
Can a vet put my reptile to sleep at home in Stockholm?
Some mobile vets offer home euthanasia for reptiles, but not all, because reptiles need species-specific sedation. Ask whether the vet has experience with your species and whether they can take your reptile to a crematory afterwards. If home visits aren't available, a quiet appointment at the start or end of clinic hours is a gentle alternative.
How much ash will I get back from my reptile?
Cremated remains weigh roughly 3-5% of body weight[4], so the amount follows size closely. A leopard gecko returns a gram or two, a bearded dragon about a tablespoon, a ball python a few ounces and a large tortoise several pounds. Shelled species return a little more because the shell is bone. The ashes weight estimator gives a figure for your pet.
