There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Is it safe to handle my reptile's body?
Yes, with basic hygiene. Reptiles often carry Salmonella, so wear disposable gloves, double-bag the body, keep it away from food and wash your hands for at least 20 seconds afterwards. Keep young children and anyone with a weakened immune system away. For venomous species, use tongs near the head, because a bite reflex can remain.
Can I freeze my reptile before cremation?
Yes, once death is definitely confirmed. Double-bag the body, place it in a labelled, lidded tub and keep it away from food. Freeze only if the wait will be more than a couple of days and you don't want a post-mortem, because freezing damages tissue. For shorter waits, the fridge is enough.
Why does a tiny gecko cost almost as much to cremate as a cat?
Because most of the price is fixed work rather than size: collection, record keeping, running the chamber, cooling, processing the ashes and a return container. Those steps take much the same time for a 50-gram gecko as for a cat. That's why comparing each provider's minimum private price matters more than per-pound rates when your reptile is small.
Where can I get a post-mortem on a reptile in Gothenburg?
Ask an exotics practice first; many send samples to a veterinary diagnostic lab or a university pathology service. Chill the body in the fridge, since freezing damages the tissue a pathologist needs, and get it to the vet within a day or two. A post-mortem is most useful after an unexpected death or when other reptiles share your home. Cremation can still follow, with the ashes returned as normal.
My reptile died after a power cut. What should I do?
First make sure it really has died: a chilled or overheated reptile can be torpid rather than dead, so bring the room back to normal temperature gradually and ask a vet to check. Then tell the vet what temperatures the enclosure reached, especially if you keep other reptiles, because they may need checking too.
