Woodland, California
Finding reptile-savvy help in Woodland
Woodland is the county seat of Yolo County, about 17 miles northwest of Sacramento, with a restored downtown, tree-lined older streets and newer subdivisions that end abruptly at tomato and grain fields. Most pets live in houses with a back garden. If you are on a country parcel outside town, give the road name, the nearest cross road and any gate code, because rural addresses here can be hard to find in the dark.
Woodland summers are long and dry, with July highs around 95F, and a pet's body left in a hot garage or car deteriorates quickly. Bring your pet into the coolest room, wrap them loosely in a sheet and set ice packs near the chest and belly. In December and January, the valley's tule fog can settle over Interstate 5 and county roads for days, and a provider may pick a later time to travel safely.
In a town like Woodland, word of mouth goes a long way. Ask your vet what they'd choose for a reptile of their own, or which crematory has handled tortoises before. Small practices often know the crematory staff by name and can tell you honestly how carefully they deal with very small bodies, which is the real question for a gecko or an anole.
With roughly 62,513 residents, Woodland is the 133rd-largest of the 307 California communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Woodland are based about 17 miles away in Sacramento, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Woodland sits within easy reach of Davis (9 miles), West Sacramento (15 miles) and Dixon (16 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Woodland; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Cremation habits in California and your reptile
A human cremation rate as high as 70.5%[1], the figure for California, supports a crowded pet aftercare market with long menus of extras: paw prints, velvet bags, photo frames. Most were designed with dogs and cats in mind. For a snake or lizard, choose only what fits, and ask to see the basic private price on its own line.
The California figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Timing a goodbye around Woodland's weather
Woodland summers are hot, with July highs averaging around 95°F. A reptile's body changes quickly in heat, so once death is confirmed, bring it indoors, seal it in a lidded tub and refrigerate it. A small lizard or snake fits easily on the bottom shelf. For a big tortoise or constrictor that won't fit, ask for same-day collection.
Heat affects burial too. Ground in Woodland can bake hard in summer, and shallow graves attract animals quickly. If you'd like to bury a reptile at home, dig deep, cover well and wait for a cooler evening. Some keepers here cremate first and bury the ashes under a shady plant once the worst of June, July, August and September has passed.

Woodland prices, from gecko to giant tortoise
Almost every pet reptile falls into the smallest weight band US crematories publish. CareCredit lists pets up to 30 lb at $45 to $75 for communal and $100 to $175 for private cremation[5]. That's why a 60 g gecko in Woodland can cost nearly as much as a small dog: you're mostly paying a minimum fee for handling, paperwork and a return container.
The California price table breaks costs down by size; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Local rules in California
Before a home burial anywhere in California, look past the regional rules to the ones closer to home. Leases, homeowners' associations and some city ordinances forbid burying animals on the property, even a small lizard. Cremation needs no such permission, and the ashes can go with you wherever you settle next.
The official California local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Woodland.
The California page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Woodland's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
Who to call and what to do, in order
- Confirm the death first. A cold, sick or brumating reptile can look lifeless. Keep it at its usual enclosure temperature and ask a reptile or exotics vet to check for a heartbeat.
- Put on disposable gloves before handling, and wash your hands for at least 20 seconds afterwards. Reptiles often carry Salmonella.
- Double-bag the body and put it in a tub with a lid and a label on a fridge shelf where no food is kept. The freezer is for a long wait only, and only when a post-mortem is off the table.
- Decide about keepsakes now: a shed skin from the enclosure, a photo of the markings or, for a tortoise, whether to keep the shell.
- Contact a provider yourself or via your clinic, and tell them the species, how heavy it is and, if it's a snake, how long. Or ask us to send you local options.
- Ask for a written total that says whether the cremation is private, partitioned or communal.
- Leave the enclosure for now if you keep other reptiles, and clean it thoroughly before anything else lives in it.
Remembering your reptile in Woodland
Woodland still feels like a farm town, with its historic opera house, old downtown storefronts and families who have been here for generations. Pets often grow old alongside children who later move away to Davis, Sacramento or further. Many families here share a pet's ashes between households, so the grown children can each keep a small part of the animal who was there through their whole childhood.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Sacramento to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Sacramento (roughly 17 miles from Woodland) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Woodland?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 95°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Woodland?
The closest communities we cover are Davis (about 9 miles), West Sacramento (about 15 miles) and Dixon (about 16 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Woodland too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How do California attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the California human cremation rate at about 70.5%[1]. We show it on the Woodland page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
What's the difference between private and communal cremation for a reptile?
In private cremation your reptile is cremated alone and only its ashes come back. In communal cremation several animals are cremated together and no ashes are returned. Some providers also offer partitioned cremation, where pets share a chamber but are kept apart; ask exactly how separation works, because it matters most for very small bodies.
My reptile died after a power cut. What should I do?
First make sure it really has died: a chilled or overheated reptile can be torpid rather than dead, so bring the room back to normal temperature gradually and ask a vet to check. Then tell the vet what temperatures the enclosure reached, especially if you keep other reptiles, because they may need checking too.
