Glencoe, Illinois
Reptile aftercare in Glencoe: the local picture
Glencoe is one of the smaller North Shore villages, about 19 miles north of the Loop, set between Lake Michigan and the Skokie Lagoons with the Chicago Botanic Garden on its northern edge. Streets curve around ravines and many houses sit back from the road, so describe your driveway and front steps when you call. Because the village is compact, collection from home is usually simple.
Glencoe winters bring January lows near 16F and freezing weather from December into March, while July is humid and in the mid-80s. If a pet dies at home in summer, move the body to the coolest room, often the basement, and use wrapped ice packs around it. In deep winter, an unheated garage or mudroom works for a day or two while you choose a provider.
If you keep reptiles near Glencoe under a wildlife or exotic animal permit, check whether your permit asks you to record a death or show how the body was dealt with. Requirements vary by place and species, so we don't list them here. A written cremation certificate from the provider is easy to ask for and covers most record-keeping needs.
Glencoe is home to about 8,724 people, the 151st-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. Chicago, roughly 19 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Glencoe run from there.
If you want to compare providers, look at Winnetka (2 miles), Highland Park (4 miles, a larger centre) and Northbrook (4 miles, a larger centre). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
60.2%[1]
The NFDA projected Illinois's cremation rate at 60.2% for 2024.
6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep reptiles.
700,000[3]
There are about 700,000 pet tortoises and turtles in the UK (1.6% of households).
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.
None of the figures on this this page are ours alone: they rest on Embrace Pet Insurance and UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026.

Cremation customs in Illinois, applied to reptiles
When roughly 60.2%[1] of local funerals in Illinois are cremations, vets usually have a cremation form ready but may ask fewer questions than you'd like. Volunteer the details yourself: species, weight, length, any shell you want kept and that you'd like the ashes back. A form filled in quickly can default to communal.
The Illinois figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Seasons, brumation and timing in Glencoe
Space heaters come out in January, February, March and December, and many reptile rooms lean on them. A stuck thermostat can overheat a small enclosure fast. If your reptile died near a heater, ask the vet to look for burns, and check the thermostat and wiring before any other animal goes back in that room.
Snow and icy roads around Glencoe in January can delay a collection by a day or two. For a reptile that's rarely a problem once death is confirmed, because the cold and a fridge give you time. If a storm is forecast and your reptile is very ill, ask your vet now what they'd suggest, rather than on a night when the roads are closed.

How much to budget in Glencoe, by size
Nationally, PetMD puts group (communal) cremation from about $50 and private from about $100[5]. In Glencoe, the gap between quotes usually comes from the extras rather than the cremation itself: home pickup, after-hours fees and the container. For a tiny reptile, ask whether a partitioned or small-pet private option has a lower minimum.

Local rules in Illinois
The rules that matter most after a reptile dies usually concern land rather than cremation. Burying on property you don't own, or scattering in a park or waterway, can need permission in Illinois. A small lizard leaves so little ash that many keepers skip scattering entirely and keep it at home, which avoids the question.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the Illinois level first; our Illinois rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Glencoe or your HOA adds anything.
What to do when your reptile dies in Glencoe
- If you're unsure, wait and call. Freezing, burial and a cremation booking can all wait for a vet's confirmation, ideally using a Doppler probe.
- If you keep a collection, raise a necropsy (post-mortem) with the vet before anything is cremated, and use the fridge, not the freezer, if you want one.
- Keep children and anyone with a weak immune system well clear of both the body and the enclosure cleaning.
- Choose between private and communal cremation. With a small lizard, find out roughly how much ash comes back, then size the keepsake to that.
- Arrange collection or drop-off. Most small reptiles can go to the vet in a sealed tub; for a heavy tortoise or long snake, ask the provider to collect.
- Get the return date and price in writing, including the urn or container.
Honoring a long, quiet bond
Many Glencoe families keep ashes at home, whether on a bookshelf, in a garden bed or in a planter by the back door. The lakefront, the lagoons and the Botanic Garden are each run by agencies that set the terms, so scattering there isn't something to do without asking. A private garden, or a spot on land a friend owns, is the simpler choice.

Questions people ask
Does the Glencoe climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 84°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Will I have to travel to Chicago to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Chicago (roughly 19 miles from Glencoe) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Glencoe?
Usually yes. Winnetka is about 2 miles away, Highland Park is about 4 miles away and Northbrook is about 4 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Illinois?
For people, yes: about 60.2%[1] of Illinois deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Glencoe follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Do crematories near Glencoe take venomous snakes?
Many will, but you must tell them the species in advance. Handle the head only with tongs, place the body in a rigid, sealed container and label it clearly. Venom remains dangerous after death, and a bite reflex can persist for a while. Some providers ask for extra handling time, which may affect the price.
How many households keep reptiles in the US?
About 6 million[2] US households keep reptiles, according to the American Pet Products Association, and 43%[7] of those keep turtles or tortoises. That's a large community, which is why most crematories near Glencoe will have cremated reptiles before, even if not often. It's still worth asking how many they see and how they keep small bodies separate.
