Rock Island, Illinois
Where Rock Island keepers turn for help
Winters here run colder than in Chicago, with January lows near 15 degrees and frost from November well into March. July reaches about 86 and can feel sticky down by the river. After a cold-weather death, a garage or rear porch keeps a small body chilled overnight. In summer, lay it on a sheet in the basement if you have one, pack frozen bottles around it, and book pickup within a day.
Rock Island sits on the Illinois side of the Quad Cities, facing Davenport across the Mississippi, and serves as the Rock Island County seat. Older neighborhoods of wooden two-stories and brick bungalows climb the bluffs above downtown, so steep driveways and long front steps are common. Aftercare firms in the Quad Cities cross the river routinely; give the street address and explain if a hillside stairway leads up to your door.
Ashes from a crematory far from Rock Island often come back by post or courier. For a reptile that's a tiny parcel, but it's worth asking how it's packed, whether it's tracked and whether someone must sign for it. If you'd rather not receive ashes in the mail, ask whether your vet can hold them for you instead.
Rock Island is home to about 36,225 people, the 51st-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover.
If you want to compare providers, look at Davenport (4 miles, a larger centre), Moline (5 miles) and Bettendorf (9 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

What local cremation culture means for keepers
The human cremation figure for Illinois, around 60.2%[1], reflects a real mix of habits, and keepers' forums show the same divide, between garden burials and private cremation. Neither camp is wrong. Size often settles it: a hatchling turtle fits under a rose bush, while a 40-pound tortoise needs more thought.
The Illinois percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Rock Island, not as a count of pets.
Rock Island weather and your reptile
Space heaters come out in January, February, March, November and December, and many reptile rooms lean on them. A stuck thermostat can overheat a small enclosure fast. If your reptile died near a heater, ask the vet to look for burns, and check the thermostat and wiring before any other animal goes back in that room.
Winter power cuts are a real danger for reptiles in Rock Island. If heat mats and lamps fail on a January night, when lows average about 15°F, a vivarium can cool quickly. A reptile found chilled and still afterwards may be alive but torpid. Warm the room gradually, avoid hot water or direct heat, and call a vet before deciding anything.

Budgeting for a snake, lizard or tortoise in Rock Island
Small pets pay the most per pound. By our estimate, private cremation works out at roughly $9 a pound for a 15 lb pet and about $4 a pound at 60 lb[5]. A 1 lb bearded dragon in Rock Island usually pays the same minimum as that 15 lb pet, so the number worth comparing is each provider's lowest private price.

What Illinois allows for burial and ashes
Few authorities inspect how a pet crematory keeps a small body apart from others, and Illinois is unlikely to be an exception. That puts the job of asking on you. The rules summarized below cover what you may do with a body or ashes; a promise that your reptile is cremated alone belongs in a written agreement.

The first 48 hours with a reptile, step by step
- Take a breath. With the body chilled and sealed, the rest can wait until tomorrow.
- Confirm with a vet whenever deep torpor, cold shock or brumation could explain what you're seeing.
- Wash everything the body touched in hot water and soap, follow with disinfectant, and finish by scrubbing your own hands.
- Compare two quotes for private cremation if you have time; minimum fees for small pets vary a lot.
- Ask three questions: how often they cremate reptiles, how they keep a small body separate, and how much ash to expect.
- Plan where the ashes will go, whether that's a locket small enough for a gecko or a proper urn for a tortoise. Use the ashes weight estimator to get the size right.
Ways to remember a reptile locally
Black Hawk State Historic Site, on the wooded bluff above the Rock River, is a familiar green space for many families here, and the Mississippi riverfront is another place people go to think about an animal they have lost. Getting ashes scattered on state or city ground requires asking the site office or city hall first. Many owners find it easier to bring ashes home and choose a garden spot when spring arrives.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Rock Island?
Usually yes. Davenport is about 4 miles away, Moline is about 5 miles away and Bettendorf is about 9 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Rock Island page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 60.2%[1] of Illinois residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Rock Island?
January, February, March, November and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 86°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can I keep my reptile's shed skin as a keepsake?
Yes, and many keepers do. A clean, complete shed shows every scale and marking. Handle it with gloves, let it dry fully and store it flat in a sealed frame or display box away from damp. Turtles that shed their scutes leave small translucent plates that fit neatly in a locket.
How much does reptile cremation cost in Rock Island?
Most pet reptiles fall into the lowest weight band, usually about $45 to $75 for communal and $100 to $175 for private cremation in the US. Very large tortoises, monitors and pythons are priced more like big dogs. In Rock Island, collection, a keepsake urn and a certificate may be extra, so ask for one written total that names the species and weight.
What happens if my reptile dies while I'm on vacation?
Your sitter should put on gloves, wrap the body in a sealed bag, put that in a lidded container in the fridge and take photos of the enclosure and thermostat. Then phone your vet, who may agree to hold the body until you're back. You don't need to rush home: a sealed, chilled body keeps for days. Check your other animals as soon as you return, especially if heating was involved.
