Finding reptile-savvy help in Brussels
Brussels families make the most of the Bois de la Cambre, the Parc du Cinquantenaire and the edge of the Sonian Forest, and flat-dwellers often keep smaller pets whose whole world was a sunny windowsill or a balcony. Either way, many owners here choose individual cremation so they can bring the ashes home. Ask for written confirmation of the type of cremation, and check whether your commune has its own guidance on pet burial if you do have a garden.
Belgium's damp, changeable climate means cool temperatures for much of the year, which gives you a little breathing room if your pet dies at home. Keep the body in the coolest room, on a blanket, away from radiators. In summer heat waves, which Brussels now sees more often, arrange cremation within a day and ask about refrigerated storage if the weekend gets in the way.
A metro like Brussels usually hosts reptile expos or breeder meetups, and the breeder who sold you your animal may be a local phone call away. Breeders see losses in their own collections and often have firm views on post-mortems and aftercare. If your reptile died young, they'll usually want to know, and some will ask to see the findings.
With roughly 1,209,000 residents, Brussels is one of the Brussels-Capital communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Antwerp (26 miles) and Ghent (31 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Brussels routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

Cremation customs in Belgium, applied to reptiles
In Belgium, about 67.98%[1] of people are cremated. That middle ground means most vets offer pet cremation routinely, but fewer have thought about reptiles specifically. If your vet seems unsure about a snake's length or a tortoise's shell, it's perfectly reasonable to contact a crematory directly and ask the questions yourself.
For the Belgium figure we rely on Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Brussels rather than as pet data.
Timing a goodbye around Brussels's weather
Wherever you are, the first rule with a reptile is to confirm death before anything else, because a cold or brumating reptile can seem lifeless. After that, keep the body in a sealed tub in the fridge. In warm weather, ask for collection within a day or two; in cold weather, you'll usually have a little more time.

How much to budget in Brussels, by size
In France, a guide from insurer SantéVet puts collective cremation of a 20 kg dog at €70 to €120 and individual at €150 to €250[5]. A reptile weighing a few hundred grams should sit well below those figures. In Brussels, ask for the price by weight and whether a minimum charge applies regardless of size.
The full price table by size is on our Brussels-Capital page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Rules reptile keepers should know in Brussels-Capital
Before a home burial anywhere in Brussels-Capital, look past the regional rules to the ones closer to home. Leases, homeowners' associations and some city ordinances forbid burying animals on the property, even a small lizard. Cremation needs no such permission, and the ashes can go with you wherever you settle next.
The first 48 hours with a reptile, step by step
- If a sitter or neighbor found your reptile, have them take pictures of the tank and the thermostat setting before anything is touched.
- Have them wear gloves, bag the body, close it in a tub with a lid, write a label and put it in the fridge far from anything edible.
- Phone your usual vet and ask whether the clinic can receive the body from your sitter. Many will hold it until you're back.
- Don't cut the trip short for the cremation. A body that is chilled and sealed, or sitting at the clinic, can safely wait for several days.
- Travelling with your reptile when it died? A vet wherever you are can confirm death, then either refrigerate the body for the drive home or tell you who cremates locally.
- Check your other animals first when you get home, especially if a heating fault may have played a part.
Memorials that suit a reptile
Brussels is a dense city of tall terraced houses, many divided into flats, with narrow staircases and few private gardens. That makes home collection the norm when a pet dies, and it helps to tell a provider which floor you are on and whether there is a lift. Because the region is bilingual, you can ask for service in French or Dutch, and most providers will also handle an enquiry in English.

Questions people ask
Why does the Brussels page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 67.98%[1] of Belgium residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Brussels?
Usually yes. Antwerp is about 26 miles away and Ghent is about 31 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Should I get a necropsy before cremating my reptile?
It's worth considering if the death was sudden or you keep other reptiles, because some infections spread between enclosures and a post-mortem can only happen once. Keep the body refrigerated, not frozen, and ask an exotics vet near Brussels about cost and timing. Cremation can still follow afterwards.
Are there exotics vets open at night in Brussels?
Larger cities often have at least one emergency hospital that sees exotics, but not every overnight clinic does. Phone before you drive and ask specifically about reptiles. If your reptile has clearly died, there's usually no need for an emergency visit: seal it in a tub in the fridge and call an exotics vet in the morning.
Can I keep my reptile's shed skin as a keepsake?
Yes, and many keepers do. A clean, complete shed shows every scale and marking. Handle it with gloves, let it dry fully and store it flat in a sealed frame or display box away from damp. Turtles that shed their scutes leave small translucent plates that fit neatly in a locket.
Can a vet put my reptile to sleep at home in Brussels?
Some mobile vets offer home euthanasia for reptiles, but not all, because reptiles need species-specific sedation. Ask whether the vet has experience with your species and whether they can take your reptile to a crematory afterwards. If home visits aren't available, a quiet appointment at the start or end of clinic hours is a gentle alternative.
