Reptile Cremation in Belgium: what to know

Whether you keep one bearded dragon or a room full of snakes, the first steps after a death in Belgium are the same: confirm it with a vet, handle the body with gloves, keep it cool and sealed, then choose private or communal cremation. The rest of this page explains how that works across Belgium.

Rules about which reptiles may be kept, and what paperwork goes with them, differ across Belgium. That paperwork can matter after a death too, especially for protected tortoises and licensed species. This page covers costs and the rules on burial and ashes, and each city page, from Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent outward, adds local detail.

We cover 3 communities in Belgium, from Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent.

How Belgium thinks about cremation

A cremation rate of roughly 67.98%[1] in Belgium leaves room for family traditions either way. Ask the people around you what they did for past pets. You may find a grandparent who buried every tortoise under the same pear tree, and a story like that can shape your choice as much as any price.

Reptile cremation prices in Belgium

European prices vary by country but follow one rule: collective (communal) cremation costs much less than individual. In Ireland, one crematorium lists individual cremation from €150 for pets under 2 kg[2], which covers most geckos, dragons and snakes. Ask a Belgium provider for its small-pet rate and exactly what's included.

In Belgium, as in most of Europe, the vet is usually the first contact and arranges collection by a pet crematorium. You can also contact a crematorium directly, which is worth doing for a reptile, because you can ask how they handle very small bodies or a tortoise shell. Ask for individual and collective prices by weight.

What Belgium allows for burial and ashes

Moving remains is simpler than moving a live reptile, but a shell from a protected tortoise species can still need paperwork if it crosses a national border. If you might one day move abroad with your tortoise's shell or ashes, hold on to the certificate or permit issued with the animal. The notes below cover what Belgium allows closer to home.

Step by step, from first check to ashes

  1. Tell your child simply and honestly that the gecko or turtle has died. Saying it has "gone to sleep" can leave a small child afraid of going to bed.
  2. Let an adult do all the handling, gloves on. The CDC says children younger than five should be kept away from reptiles and the places they live, because of Salmonella.
  3. Offer a way to say goodbye without touching: a drawing for the box, a short note or a favorite photo.
  4. Let them help choose between bringing ashes home and a garden burial. Being asked matters more than the answer.
  5. Save something they can hold, perhaps a shed skin behind glass or a single scute inside a little locket.
  6. Wash hands together afterwards, and clean anything the reptile touched before the empty tank is used again.

Memorials that suit a reptile

Tortoise keepers often choose to keep the shell, cleaned by a specialist, or to have it cremated with the body. Either way, decide before collection. A shell can sit in a display case with the tortoise's name and hatch year, a fitting tribute for an animal that may have been part of the family for decades. Our shell guide explains both routes.

The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask

Can I bury my reptile at home in Belgium?

Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Local councils, cities and landlords can be stricter than regional rules. Because reptiles often carry Salmonella, bury well away from vegetable beds and wash your hands afterwards. If you rent, cremation keeps your reptile with you.

Can I release a sick reptile or dispose of a body outdoors in Belgium?

Please don't. Releasing a pet reptile can harm local wildlife, and some species are covered by invasive-species rules that make release illegal. Disposing of a body in the open can spread Salmonella and attract scavengers. If you can no longer care for a living reptile, contact a reptile rescue; for a body, choose cremation or a proper burial.

Do vets in Belgium offer home euthanasia for reptiles?

Some do, mostly mobile vets working around larger cities such as Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent. Because sedation differs between a snake, a lizard and a tortoise, ask how often the vet does this for your species and who transports the body afterwards. Where no home service exists, booking the first or last slot of the clinic day keeps things quiet.

How many communities do you cover in Belgium?

We currently have local reptile aftercare guides for 3 communities in Belgium, including Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules and how collection usually works there, with advice for keepers of snakes, lizards and tortoises.

Where can I scatter my reptile's ashes in Belgium?

Private land with the owner's permission is simplest. Parks, beaches and public land usually have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first. A small reptile leaves very little ash, so many keepers bury it in a planter at home or keep it in a pendant instead of scattering.

How can I be sure my reptile was cremated on its own in Belgium?

Ask for the promise in writing. A good provider will state which type of cremation you're paying for, how a small body is tracked from pickup to return and what kind of certificate you'll receive. Some let you be present or drop your reptile off yourself. Vague answers to these questions are a reason to look elsewhere.

  3. [3] If U.S. reptile-owning households each acquired one reptile a year and first-year mortality matched the UK study (3.6%), about 216,000 new pet reptiles would die within a year; the contested 75% figure would imply 4.5 million. Our estimate: 6,000,000 households x 1 reptile x 3.6%; vs x 75%. How we calculate.
