Snake, lizard and tortoise cremation in Antwerp

Antwerp, Flanders

Where Antwerp keepers turn for help

Antwerp's mild, often grey weather means a death at home seldom forces a hurried decision. Lay your pet somewhere cool, on a blanket, away from radiators and sunny windows, and on a warm day add wrapped cold packs. That leaves time for a partner or children to come home and say goodbye, and to ring your vet, who can explain local options and whether they offer cremation through the practice.

Antwerp is compact and busy, with narrow townhouses in Zurenborg and Borgerhout, converted warehouses on Het Eilandje and apartment blocks across Berchem and Linkeroever. Plenty of residents cycle or take the tram and do not own a car, so having a pet collected from home is often the practical route. Give the provider your floor, whether the building has a lift, and whether a van can stop outside on a busy street.

Keepers with several animals are common in a metro like Antwerp, and a sudden death in a collection changes the plan. Before cremation, ask an exotics vet whether a necropsy (an animal post-mortem) makes sense; some infections spread between enclosures, and the chance to check disappears once the body is cremated. Leave the empty enclosure untouched for now and wash your hands well.

Antwerp's population is around 523,000, the largest of the 2 Flanders communities we cover.

If you want to compare providers, look at Brussels (26 miles, a larger centre) and Ghent (32 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

In 2023, 67.98% of deaths in Belgium were cremated (21 crematoria).

6 million[2]

About 6 million US households keep reptiles.

700,000[3]

There are about 700,000 pet tortoises and turtles in the UK (1.6% of households).

3-5% of body weight[4]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Cremation customs in Belgium, applied to reptiles

When roughly 67.98%[1] of local funerals in Belgium are cremations, vets usually have a cremation form ready but may ask fewer questions than you'd like. Volunteer the details yourself: species, weight, length, any shell you want kept and that you'd like the ashes back. A form filled in quickly can default to communal.

We take the Belgium rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Antwerp, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Timing a goodbye around Antwerp's weather

In any climate, a large reptile needs more planning than a small one. A gecko fits in a fridge; a 60-pound tortoise doesn't. If yours is big, ask the provider in Antwerp for a collection time that suits the weather, and keep the body in the coolest room, on a hard floor, out of the sun until then.

Reptile cremation prices in Antwerp

Waiting times differ across Europe as much as prices. AniCura in Sweden says ashes normally take 2 to 4 weeks to come back[5], longer than many US providers quote. If you're in Antwerp and hoping to have the ashes home by a particular date, raise it when you book rather than afterwards.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Flanders: Flanders costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Rules reptile keepers should know in Flanders

The rules that matter most after a reptile dies usually concern land rather than cremation. Burying on property you don't own, or scattering in a park or waterway, can need permission in Flanders. A small lizard leaves so little ash that many keepers skip scattering entirely and keep it at home, which avoids the question.

Who to call and what to do, in order

  1. Ask how long the clinic can hold your reptile and whether it stays chilled. Most can keep a small body for several days.
  2. Say whether you want a post-mortem right at the start; once the body is frozen or cremated, that option is gone.
  3. Find out which crematory the clinic uses and ask if reptiles there are cremated alone or together with other animals.
  4. Take your reptile home instead if you prefer a garden burial or a different provider. Ask for it in a sealed, labelled container.
  5. Check the release paperwork: the name, the species and the service you picked ought to appear on the form.
  6. Ask for a call when the ashes reach the clinic, and find out if a quieter time can be arranged for collecting them.

Honoring a long, quiet bond

Most aftercare in Antwerp is arranged in Dutch, though many providers are comfortable in English and French, and the city's large international community means that is often needed. Ask for the quote in your preferred language so nothing gets lost. Check whether the cremation is individual, so only your pet's ashes come back, or communal, and whether collection and an urn are included.

Questions people ask

How do Belgium attitudes to cremation compare?

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) puts the Belgium human cremation rate at about 67.98%[1]. We show it on the Antwerp page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Antwerp?

Usually yes. Brussels is about 26 miles away and Ghent is about 32 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

What's the difference between private and communal cremation for a reptile?

In private cremation your reptile is cremated alone and only its ashes come back. In communal cremation several animals are cremated together and no ashes are returned. Some providers also offer partitioned cremation, where pets share a chamber but are kept apart; ask exactly how separation works, because it matters most for very small bodies.

How do I get a large snake or tortoise out of an Antwerp apartment?

Use a strong, lidded tub rather than a bag, and ask a second person to help if it's heavy. Take the service lift if your building has one and tell the front desk a collection is coming. Many providers will collect from inside your home if you give them the weight, the floor and any stairs.

Is it safe to handle my reptile's body?

Yes, with basic hygiene. Reptiles often carry Salmonella, so wear disposable gloves, double-bag the body, keep it away from food and wash your hands for at least 20 seconds afterwards. Keep young children and anyone with a weakened immune system away. For venomous species, use tongs near the head, because a bite reflex can remain.

How much ash will I get back from my reptile?

Cremated remains weigh roughly 3-5% of body weight[4], so the amount follows size closely. A leopard gecko returns a gram or two, a bearded dragon about a tablespoon, a ball python a few ounces and a large tortoise several pounds. Shelled species return a little more because the shell is bone. The ashes weight estimator gives a figure for your pet.
