Incheon, South Korea
Where Incheon keepers turn for help
Incheon's coastal climate brings humid summers, heavy monsoon rains and cold winter winds off the Yellow Sea. In summer, cool your pet's body quickly with a towel and ice packs in an air-conditioned room, away from sunny windows. In winter a cool room away from floor heating buys a little time, but arranging cremation within a day or two is normal here and makes the waiting easier on everyone.
Incheon mixes older neighborhoods around the port with newer high-rise districts like Songdo and Cheongna, and most pets live in apartment complexes. As in the rest of Korea, burying a pet in parks, hills or apartment grounds isn't allowed, so licensed cremation is the usual path. Collection from your building helps if you don't drive. Share your district when you ask for options.
Keepers with several animals are common in a metro like Incheon, and a sudden death in a collection changes the plan. Before cremation, ask an exotics vet whether a necropsy (an animal post-mortem) makes sense; some infections spread between enclosures, and the chance to check disappears once the body is cremated. Leave the empty enclosure untouched for now and wash your hands well.
With roughly 2,954,000 residents, Incheon is one of the South Korea communities we cover.
Our pages for Seoul (17 miles, a larger centre), Gangnam (18 miles) and Daejeon (85 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Incheon as well.

Cremation habits in South Korea and your reptile
In South Korea, about 92.43%[1] of people are cremated, so few will think it odd to cremate a snake or bearded dragon. What does surprise many keepers is how little ash a small reptile leaves, often a teaspoon or less. Knowing that ahead of time helps you pick a keepsake that fits, rather than a standard urn that looks almost empty.
The South Korea percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Incheon, not as a count of pets.
Heat, cold and power cuts in Incheon
Seasons change reptile behavior as much as they change timing. Many species eat less and barely move in the cooler months, and tortoises may hibernate. If your reptile stopped moving during a seasonal slowdown in Incheon, a vet check is the kind thing to do before you make any plans at all.

Paying for a reptile's cremation in Incheon
Municipal collection is cheap in some Asian cities but usually doesn't return ashes. In Tokyo's Shinjuku ward it costs JPY 3,000[5], and a private small-pet cremation costs about 4.8x[6] as much. If you want your reptile's ashes back in Incheon, make sure you're booking an individual cremation, not a collection service.

Burial, scattering and protected species in South Korea
Before a home burial anywhere in South Korea, look past the regional rules to the ones closer to home. Leases, homeowners' associations and some city ordinances forbid burying animals on the property, even a small lizard. Cremation needs no such permission, and the ashes can go with you wherever you settle next.
What to do when your reptile dies in Incheon
- Confirm the death first. Illness, cold and brumation can all make a reptile seem dead when it isn't. Leave the enclosure at its normal warmth and have a vet who treats reptiles or exotics listen for a heartbeat.
- Put on disposable gloves before handling, and wash your hands for at least 20 seconds afterwards. Reptiles often carry Salmonella.
- Double-bag the body and put it in a tub with a lid and a label on a fridge shelf where no food is kept. The freezer is for a long wait only, and only when a post-mortem is off the table.
- Decide about keepsakes now: a shed left in the tank, a photo of the pattern or, with a tortoise, whether the shell stays with you.
- Contact a provider through your vet or directly, giving species, weight and, for a snake, length. We can also send you local options.
- Ask for a written total that says whether the cremation is private, partitioned or communal.
- Leave the enclosure for now if you keep other reptiles, and clean it thoroughly before anything else lives in it.
Ways to remember a reptile locally
Because Incheon is home to Korea's main international airport, many families here have pets that have traveled with them from abroad, or will travel with them when they move on. If you're planning to relocate overseas, cremation with ashes returned in a sealed, portable urn, plus a cremation certificate, makes the journey easier. Ask the provider for both before the cremation rather than afterward.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Incheon?
Usually yes. Seoul is about 17 miles away, Gangnam is about 18 miles away and Daejeon is about 85 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Incheon page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 92.43%[1] of South Korea residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Do I have to use the crematory my Incheon vet recommends?
No. Your vet's arrangement is convenient, but you can choose any provider that serves Incheon and ask them to collect from the clinic. For a reptile, it's worth asking whether they have handled your species before and how they keep very small bodies separate from others.
How much ash will I get back from my reptile?
Cremated remains weigh roughly 3-5% of body weight[4], so the amount follows size closely. A leopard gecko returns a gram or two, a bearded dragon about a tablespoon, a ball python a few ounces and a large tortoise several pounds. Shelled species return a little more because the shell is bone. The ashes weight estimator gives a figure for your pet.
How do I get a large snake or tortoise out of an Incheon apartment?
Use a strong, lidded tub rather than a bag, and ask a second person to help if it's heavy. Take the service lift if your building has one and tell the front desk a collection is coming. Many providers will collect from inside your home if you give them the weight, the floor and any stairs.
How much does it cost to cremate a snake or lizard in Incheon?
Published prices for small pets outside the US give a good guide. In the UK, individual cremation of a cat-sized pet is roughly £160 to £190; in Australia the median for pets under 5 kg is about AUD 412; in Ireland individual cremation starts from €150 for pets under 2 kg. Communal is much cheaper. Ask an Incheon provider for its small-pet rate and what's included.
