Seoul, South Korea
Where Seoul keepers turn for help
Pet funerals have grown quickly in Seoul as more single and two-person households share their homes with pets, and a short farewell ceremony before a private cremation is a common choice. Many families attend in person and take the ashes home the same day. If you'd rather not attend, that's fine too. Ask whether your pet will be cremated individually, how long the process takes and what the ashes will come back in.
Most pets in Seoul live in large apartment complexes, and burying a pet in a park, on a hillside or on shared apartment grounds is not allowed. That leaves licensed cremation as the usual route, and many of the facilities serving Seoul are outside the city in Gyeonggi Province. Families without a car often rely on collection. When you request options, share your district and whether you'd like to travel with your pet or have them collected.
Outdoor space is scarce in Seoul, and a shared courtyard or rented yard is no place to bury a reptile. That's one reason most city keepers choose cremation. A small lizard's ashes fit a balcony planter or a bookshelf, so you still have somewhere to remember them without asking a landlord's permission.
With roughly 9,776,000 residents, Seoul is the largest of the 2 South Korea communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Gangnam (5 miles), Incheon (17 miles) and Daejeon (87 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Seoul routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

6 million[2]
About 6 million US households keep reptiles.
700,000[3]
There are about 700,000 pet tortoises and turtles in the UK (1.6% of households).
3-5% of body weight[4]
Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

How South Korea thinks about cremation
A human cremation rate as high as 92.43%[1], the figure for South Korea, supports a crowded pet aftercare market with long menus of extras: paw prints, velvet bags, photo frames. Most were designed with dogs and cats in mind. For a snake or lizard, choose only what fits, and ask to see the basic private price on its own line.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) is where the South Korea figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Seoul tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Seasonal risks for reptiles in Seoul
Seasons change reptile behavior as much as they change timing. Many species eat less and barely move in the cooler months, and tortoises may hibernate. If your reptile stopped moving during a seasonal slowdown in Seoul, a vet check is the kind thing to do before you make any plans at all.

How much to budget in Seoul, by size
Municipal collection is cheap in some Asian cities but usually doesn't return ashes. In Tokyo's Shinjuku ward it costs JPY 3,000[5], and a private small-pet cremation costs about 4.8x[6] as much. If you want your reptile's ashes back in Seoul, make sure you're booking an individual cremation, not a collection service.

What South Korea allows for burial and ashes
Few authorities inspect how a pet crematory keeps a small body apart from others, and South Korea is unlikely to be an exception. That puts the job of asking on you. The rules summarized below cover what you may do with a body or ashes; a promise that your reptile is cremated alone belongs in a written agreement.
The first 48 hours with a reptile, step by step
- Note what happened. Check the enclosure temperatures; if there was a power cut or heating failure, tell your vet, especially if you keep other reptiles.
- Look gently for signs of life at normal temperature: a tongue flick, an eye response, a slow breath. Then call a vet to confirm.
- Handle with gloves, and use tongs near the head if the species is venomous. A bite reflex can remain after death.
- Store the body cold in a sealed tub, double-bagged, once death is confirmed.
- Tell the provider about the shell or the size ahead of pickup. Keeping a tortoise shell is possible, but the decision has to come before the cremation, not after.
- Keep a shed or scute if there is one to save: let it dry, then lay it flat behind glass.
- Give yourself time. The quiet of an unlit vivarium can hit hard. There's no rush to take it down.
Memorials that suit a reptile
Seoul's seasons are sharp: humid monsoon summers, when a pet's body must be kept cool quickly, and freezing, dry winters. In summer, lay your pet on a towel with ice packs near the belly and keep the air conditioning on until collection. In winter, a cool room away from floor heating works for a short time. Either way, arranging cremation within a day or two is normal and makes the wait easier.

Questions people ask
Why does the Seoul page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 92.43%[1] of South Korea residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Seoul?
The closest communities we cover are Gangnam (about 5 miles), Incheon (about 17 miles) and Daejeon (about 87 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Seoul too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Can I get my reptile's ashes back in Seoul?
Yes, if you book an individual (private) cremation. Some municipal collection services and communal options don't return ashes, so confirm before you agree. Many providers in the region offer a short farewell ceremony and columbarium niches; ask whether those are included or priced separately.
Will a crematory near Seoul accept a snake?
Most pet crematories will cremate a snake, but experience varies. Give the species, weight and length when you call. A long python may need to be coiled into a container that fits the chamber door, and a few smaller operations have a size limit. Ask how often they handle snakes and whether the cremation is private.
How do I get a large snake or tortoise out of a Seoul apartment?
Use a strong, lidded tub rather than a bag, and ask a second person to help if it's heavy. Take the service lift if your building has one and tell the front desk a collection is coming. Many providers will collect from inside your home if you give them the weight, the floor and any stairs.
Can I keep my reptile's shed skin as a keepsake?
Yes, and many keepers do. A clean, complete shed shows every scale and marking. Handle it with gloves, let it dry fully and store it flat in a sealed frame or display box away from damp. Turtles that shed their scutes leave small translucent plates that fit neatly in a locket.
